Congress Approves Historic Social Security Benefits for Public Sector Retirees

Congress has passed a historic bill to expand Social Security benefits for millions of public sector retirees. This new law, known as the Social Security Fairness Act, will correct long-standing inequities in the system by ensuring that retirees from public sector jobs like teachers, firefighters, and police officers receive the full benefits they deserve.

For decades, these workers have been penalized under the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP), which reduced their Social Security payments due to pensions from their government jobs. Thanks to this new law, these workers will now have their Social Security benefits restored to the appropriate level.

The bill passed the Senate with overwhelming support and is expected to be signed into law by President Biden. This step marks a decisive victory for equality, ensuring that those who have served the community will no longer be disadvantaged during their retirement years.
